Celebrate Employee Appreciation Day: Why Recognition Matters & How to Show It

Employee Appreciation Day on March 7 is the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking individuals who keep your company running. While a simple “thank you” can go a long way, meaningful appreciation can have a lasting impact on employee morale, engagement, and retention. Investing in a culture of appreciation benefits not just employees but also the overall success of your business.

Why Employee Appreciation Matters

We asked Cathy Ocasio, Senior HR Manager, North America, at Myron, to share her thoughts on the importance of appreciation in today’s workplace:

Employee appreciation in the workplace is important since it has a direct impact on people and performance within an organization. As working conditions become busier and more stressful today, employees must feel valued in order to be motivated. Employees feel valued when appreciated, they do good work and continue working towards the organizational goals. This feeling of value also makes employees more likely to remain in the long term, decreasing turnover, hiring, and training costs.

Appreciation is not only beneficial to the company—it’s also beneficial to employee well-being. Being appreciated provides employees with a sense of purpose and belonging that eliminates stress and stops burnout. Furthermore, a culture of appreciation also generates open communication, respect, teamwork, and positivity—all the main characteristics of a high-performing workplace.

A culture of appreciation promotes well-being, teamwork, and open communication. When employees feel acknowledged, they are more engaged, productive, and positive about their work environment. Showing gratitude is an easy yet highly effective way to maintain a thriving workplace.

How Leaders Can Improve Employee Recognition

We also spoke with Isabel Trampert, Manager, People & Culture, at Myron, about how leaders can better recognize their teams:

Leaders should ensure that recognition is regular and specific. It’s not enough to give praise only once a year during performance reviews—appreciation should be continuous and targeted toward specific achievements. It’s also important to consider individual preferences: while some employees enjoy public recognition, others may prefer a private conversation. A strong culture of appreciation should go beyond just results and also acknowledge effort, dedication, and teamwork.

Creative, personal gifts can also serve as a meaningful token of appreciation. A custom-designed team T-shirt or hoodie, or an item featuring an inside joke from the department—such as a mug with a classic team catchphrase—can foster a sense of belonging and show that leadership truly knows and values their team. Ultimately, great recognition isn’t about grand gestures or financial incentives; it’s about making employees feel seen, valued, and like an essential part of the team.

One of the most effective ways to show appreciation is through shared experiences. Team events—whether in-person or remote—offer a great opportunity to connect outside of work, have casual conversations, and strengthen team bonds. A team dinner, a game night, or a virtual coffee chat can create a relaxed atmosphere and demonstrate that the team is valued as a whole.

Thoughtful Employee Appreciation Gifts

In addition to heartfelt recognition, a well-chosen gift can make employees feel valued. Here are some great appreciation ideas:

Creating a Lasting Culture of Appreciation

While Employee Appreciation Day is a great reminder to celebrate your team, recognition should be an ongoing practice. Whether through a heartfelt thank-you, a personalized gift, or a team event, small efforts can make a big difference in employee satisfaction and loyalty. Investing in appreciation isn’t just about celebrating once a year—it’s about fostering a culture where employees feel valued every day.
