3 October holidays for promotional giveaways

Halloween may be the most popular holiday in October, but it isn’t the only one. There are many other, minor holidays laced throughout the month, meant to celebrate history and raise awareness of important individuals and causes. Small business owners can likewise raise their company’s profile by taking advantage of some of these lesser-known days. Giving away promotional products throughout the month increases visibility for a brand and usually last well beyond the 31st.

World Habitat Day
In 1985, the United Nations designated the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day. The purpose of the holiday is to raise awareness for building sustainable shelters and creating more habitable environments in which people can live.

The theme for 2012 is “Changing Cities” to create less chaotic and cleaner metropolitan areas. Business owners should consider eco-friendly giveaways to build their brand on this holiday. A logo tote bag and reusable water bottle promotes greener living in major urban centers while creating a consistent advertising presence with consumers.

World Teacher Day
On October 5, World Teacher Day is observed to appreciate educators across the globe and the important role they play in the growth and development of young minds. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created the holiday to honor hard working teachers who make sure their students are receiving the best education possible.

Small business owners can mark the occasion by giving away promo items that are functional in the classroom. Instructors are always looking for ways to stay organized, and a promotional wall calendar can create a great deal of exposure because of its everyday functionality. Logo ink pens may raise a company’s profile even higher, because the gift is likely to be shared with a coworker or a student.

Columbus Day
This is the only federal holiday during October. Banks and post offices in the United States are closed to observe the achievements of Christopher Columbus, who landed on Hispaniola in 1492. Of course, the navigator originally thought he had landed in India, but his discovery had much a much larger impact than opening trade routes with Asia.

For businesses that stay open on Columbus Day, there is an opportunity to create traffic within an establishment and potentially attract new customers. Companies can use promotional advertising to offer special sales and discounts to attract consumers who have the day off from work.

Throughout the month of October, there are plenty of opportunities for small business owners to raise their establishment’s profile. Giving away promotional items in keeping with the various holidays can sustain visibility as November arrives.
