Small business owners are always looking for ways to improve their companies. From holding promotional giveaways for marketing purposes to hiring new employees, entrepreneurs do their best to search for strategies that will better their businesses in both the short and long runs.

However, some owners overlook some great resources that can streamline basic procedures and even lead to stronger revenue. The web contains a multitude of services and news sources that can immediately benefit small businesses.

Read on for a list of the top five free online resources you should be using.

1. The OPEN Forum
The American Express OPEN Forum is one of the best places to seek advice from industry leaders, experts from various fields and other small business owners. All of these contributors provide unique perspectives that can teach entrepreneurs. The site is regularly updated with new articles and videos from thought leaders.

One reason the OPEN Forum is so beneficial is that contributors produce content about the latest trends for almost every aspect of business. From social media marketing and new employee training to leadership and client retention, the site covers practically every topic that a small business owner likely has questions about.

2. Survey Monkey
Entrepreneurs should regularly seek feedback from both clients and employees. These groups can tell owners what aspects of a business must improve and what ones should be expanded upon in the future. However, conducting polls and measuring responses isn't the simplest task in the world, but Survey Monkey can handle almost every aspect of research.

Survey Monkey uses a tiered pricing plan so that entrepreneurs can find the perfect option for their needs. The free plan is the most basic, but likely includes enough features to help most small business owners. This pricing model allows companies to put 10 questions in their surveys and receive 100 unique responses.

3. Skype
Video conferencing has become extremely popular, especially as remote working has gone from rare to common. Small business owners can easily integrate communication software into their companies, but most software is expensive.

However, one of the most popular video conferencing applications is completely free for basic calls. Skype can be downloaded on almost every computer and allows entrepreneurs to contact other users without ever paying a dime. What's more, the service also has calling features for landlines and mobile devices for modest rates so small business owners could essentially replace their phones with Skype.

4. SBA.gov
Almost every small business owner has worked with the Small Business Administration at one point or another. The federal agency and its state offices helps independent companies access necessary resources and provides advice for important matters.

The SBA's website is also a valuable resource to small business owners across the United States. The site features links to loans, grants, local resources and helpful tips. The SBA basically developed a one-shop stop so that entrepreneurs wouldn't have to waste hours scouring the internet for specific information. Almost every question and concern can be dealt with by accessing the SBA's page.

5. NFIB
Few organizations do as much for small businesses as the National Federation of Independent Business. The group offers all types of assistance to entrepreneurs, even those who aren't card-carrying members. Many of the NFIB's blog articles and advice are free to access so that every small business owner can use the information. Additionally, the NFIB regularly releases survey results and new research about how members feel about specific issues, including the direction of the economy. Basically, the NFIB's website is a great place for small business owners who want to read late-breaking news and helpful content.

In late April, Myron started a Facebook contest to celebrate Mother's Day. Contestants simply had to write essays about how their moms touched their lives and served as inspirational figures. The response was overwhelming, and people wrote in with heartwarming tales that demonstrated how wonderful their mothers are. The prizes were a Cardona Travel Collection, which includes a jewelry roll, cosmetics bag and compact mirror, and a pair of Burgos flats.

Melissa won with her touching tale, titled "For My Mom," about how she and her mom (who's pictured with Melissa's niece) went into business together.

For My Mom
When I told my mom I wanted to open a mobile grooming business and have her as my business partner she was ecstatic. She told me there was no way I could fail, I was too good at what I did. She and I had been working together at a grooming salon and I wanted something of my own but did not want to do it by myself. When taking a huge leap, who better to be by your side but your mom? She had been dealing with some financial struggles of her own and this business promised a brighter future for both of us.

I began the search for a used mobile grooming vehicle and found one about 5 hours away from us. I left my husband and two young kids at home and my mom and I hit the road to go look at our future business vehicle. I was a nervous wreck. I was so afraid of the "what if's". Mostly the "what if I fail?" After deciding we were going to buy this van, we sat in the hotel room and I paced as the anxiety took hold. My mom took me by the shoulders, looked me in the eye and said, "You can do this." If it wasn't for her presence I most likely would have chickened out and left without the grooming van. It was my mom who made me believe in myself. That weekend was incredibly special for me. It had been a long time since my mom and I had spent a weekend together. She told me how proud of me she was and that even if I wasn't her daughter, she'd still love me.

A week after we drove the new van home my mom passed unexpectedly. It has been five years now since she's been gone. It took me a little longer to open my business than originally planned but I knew she would want me to continue with it. I opened it March 12, 2008, on what would have been her 56th birthday. As usual, my mom was right. I didn't fail and I am now about to put my second grooming van on the road with an employee in it. Thanks mom, I love you.

Additional stories
In honor of Mother's Day, some other entries deserve special attention. Below are some excepts of some heartwarming tales that show how much moms mean to their loved ones.

My Mom Rocks!
[My mom] supported my sister all the way to the London 2012 Olympics! My sister could never have been an Olympian without my mom there every step of the way, encouraging her. She should be the parent of the month because of everything she's given up for us. We are so thankful she's our mom because without her, we would not be nearly as successful, confident or capable. Thanks mom!

Always Smiling
The woman who most inspires me is also the one I've know the longest. A single mother to four children, you can imagine the difficult road my mother walked. But, whenever you see her, she's smiling. And, she inspires others to continue smiling, despite difficult circumstances. She is truly unique and a blessing to many.

Inspired
While it's not my mom but the love of my life, she has inspired me to be a better man and father. Our son will be born this month and we're so excited! She has made me want to do better, I was headed down the wrong path until she came back into my life, and I'm grateful for what shes done for me.

All of these heartwarming tales demonstrate the special bonds mothers share with their families. Remember to show your mom you care this Mother's Day by telling her you love her and giving her unique mother's day gifts like the Cardona Travel Collection.

Additionally, Myron will also celebrate Father's Day with a special contest. After Mother's Day, start thinking about a special story about you and your father to share so you can win a great prize and have your tale shared with the world.

Despite having the fewest number of days, February still has plenty of holidays, including major celebratory days like Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day and smaller ones like Umbrella Day. Small business owners should always look for unique opportunities to advertise their companies, and associating their establishments with monthly holidays can be an effective strategy. Businesses can associate themselves with minor holidays by distributing unique promotional products that are relevant to the days' themes and festivities.

Umbrella Day
February 10 is Umbrella Day, on which people celebrate the functionality of umbrellas. February's weather is particularly unpredictable, so it's important to be prepared for various conditions and sudden changes.

Umbrella Day is the simplest day to associate with your business. You can distribute branded umbrellas on February 10 to all of your clients to ensure that they're protected from precipitation. The promotional gifts are useful and your customers will appreciate that you helped them stay dry during wet weather.

Umbrellas are among the best promotional marketing products you can use. Every time your clients use the branded items, your logos will be on display to large groups of consumers. For example, if your customers use the gifts during their morning commutes, other workers will see your advertisements.

Valentine's Day
February's most widely celebrated holiday is Valentine's Day. Consumers look forward to February 14 every year and show their loved ones how much they care. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the holiday's popularity is growing. In 2012, the NRF estimated that consumers spent $17.6 billion, a new record for Valentine's spending. While the majority of spending was dedicated to gifts, restaurants and the hospitality industry also expected to see holiday gains.

Chocolate is one of the most popular presents during February's holiday, so consider distributing small treats that your customers can re-gift. You clients will love that you gave them some sweets to use as gifts for their significant others. While the promotional items won't last long, they can reinforce your relationships and help you retain your loyal patrons.

Alternatively, promotional pens might be the best branded items to distribute before Valentine's Day. Your customers can use your pens to write love letters and fill out cards. The marketing tools will last well beyond February 14, so you'll raise your business' visibility for an extended period of time.

Presidents' Day
The third Monday in February is Presidents' Day. According to History.com, the holiday was originally observed on February 22 – George Washington's birthday – and was moved in 1971 as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which created more long weekends for members of the workforce. Additionally, the new date is meant to honor Abraham Lincoln whose birthday is February 12. Presidents' Day is the only day in February on which most consumers have time off from work. Schools, government facilities, most banks and many businesses are closed in observance of the holiday.

Consider holding a special event to attract your customers. A promotional giveaway can help you recognize the holiday's importance and create a new marketing presence. Distribute logo-emblazoned gifts that can increase your company's visibility into the new season, and remember to celebrate Presidents' Day.

Include patriotic themes and imagery on your branded products. For instance, you can emboss American flags on your promotional mugs, note pads and pens. Additionally, you should advertise your giveaway to attract all of your regular customers. Post pictures of your promotional items on your social media pages so your clients know what gifts you'll be distributing on Presidents' Day.

The holidays are the season of giving, and Myron Corp. has celebrated that spirit by participating in the Angel Program for the last 10 years. The charity, which is sponsored by the Salvation Army, collects gifts for needy children who might not otherwise receive any presents for the holidays.

Since 2002, Myron employees have donated gifts for over 750 children. More than 40 workers participated this year and gave multiple presents. The toys and gifts will be distributed later this week and over the weekend. The number of presents given this year will hopefully eclipse 2011's number to bring joy to even more children.

In recent years, Myron Corp. has also started holding food and clothing drives during the holiday season. Employees anonymously donated non-perishable foodstuffs and warm winter clothing for needy families. The food was distributed prior to Thanksgiving, so that families could celebrate and enjoy a traditional holiday meal.

It's better to give than it is to receive during the holidays. Myron Corp. has given back to the community to make sure that every family can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year. These donations will help needy children and their parents enjoy the seasonal cheer.
